How to Find a CBD Gummies Partner for Your Retail Business

CBD is all the rage these days. It comes in all shapes and forms, including tinctures, oils, lotions, creams, bath bombs, patches, teas, vapes, capsules, edibles, and more. You may have noticed that one kind of CBD product in particular is especially popular, aside from oils: gummies. Gummies are a delicious way to ingest and reap the healthy properties of CBD without the earthy taste of other methods, and topicals do not provide its mental benefits (you may hear that CBD is not psychoactive like THC. This is misleading; otherwise CBD would not be able to reduce anxiety or treat depression and PTSD. CBD does not get you high, true, which means it’s not an intoxicant).

Do you think CBD gummies might fit in well with your store? There’s probably an audience for them, but how do you obtain them to sell? You don’t have time, though, to start up an entirely new business with the exclusive purpose of selling CBD gummies, which is extremely time-consuming, expensive, and complicated (obtaining the necessary equipment, growing and farming organic hemp, extracting the cannabidiol from the plants, the chemistry involved in creating the products themselves, and sending products to third-party labs for testing are just a few examples of the basics).

If you want to sell CBD gummies alongside your other merchandise, you can partner with an existing company and foster a business relationship. Not just any gummy manufacturer will suffice, though—here are a few things to keep in mind when searching for a CBD partner:

Be thorough in your research

The legalities of CBD are complicated. Products derived from industrial hemp are technically legal at a federal level as long as they contain .3 percent THC or less. Each state enforces its own rules, though (federal law does not necessarily trump state law in this case), so you need to familiarize yourself with them. For instance, you’ll have a much easier time selling CBD gummies if you are in states like Colorado, Oregon, or California, which are already known for being more marijuana-friendly. Texas, however, only allows doctor-prescribed CBD for conditions like epilepsy, and Nebraska does not allow cannabis products at all. You won’t be able to sell CBD gummies from your shelves if you are physically located in the latter two states.

The industry is also heavily unregulated. The FDA has only approved one CBD brand called Epidiolex, which is for treating pediatric epilepsy. It does not watch the industry carefully though (though it has sent warning letters to companies that make unfounded health claims about CBD, such as saying that it can cure anything), which leaves the door open for shady companies to sell inferior, unhealthy, and even dangerous products with toxins that hemp absorbs (such as heavy metals and pesticides).

When looking for a CBD gummies brand to partner with, make sure that you see “lab results” or “Certificate of Analysis” easily accessible on its website. These mean that the company tests their products for purity and potency with third-party labs—all the best brands do this. Also, look to see if they are transparent about where their hemp comes from, preferably states that maintain better hemp-farming practices.

Make sure they know their science

The company should also know its science inside and out. As a business owner in the retail space, you are probably familiar with the concept of “dropshipping.” Well, CBD is something that is not always best dropshipped. It will know its hemp, extraction methods, test results, and other elements much more closely if it produces its own products instead of simply reselling them. Mislabeling is a serious issue in the CBD world, and you don’t want to sell your customers anything potentially harmful.

Find a brand that aligns with yours

A successful business partnership requires that both parties’ brands have things in common. If you are a casual clothing retailer that wants to sell CBD gummies at checkout, for example (whether online or in-person), customers will think it odd if the gummies are targeted toward athletes and have contradictory brand imagery. This partnership would work better if you sold athletic wear.

CBD businesses target niche markets the same way you do, so search for companies that appeal to the same audiences. Are both of you whimsical? Friendly? Modern? The CBD company has to agree to a partnership first, and they won’t let you sell their products on your shelves if there’s nothing in it for them. You’re more likely to see success if your brand tones and imagery align.

CBD gummies are delicious and boast a number of health benefits, and companies that produce them can make a great business partner. What qualities will you look for in a CBD brand?
